This is Why I Think Histology’s Fun

BY Dr. Keith J. Kaplan

With many thanks to wise histotechnologist – here is a holiday adaptation of “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things” for histology around the holidays.

This is Why I Think Histology’s Fun

An adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things

Fungus on toenails and whiskers on a nevus

Bright green cassettes and white woven gauze squares

Oriented skin ellipses tied up with strings

This is why I think histology’s fun

Cream colored colon and pilonidal cysts

Tonsils and appendix and bone marrows with clots

Sharp blades that shine as they slice through the block

This is why I think histology’s fun

When the part type

Needs to be changed

And the pathologist’s mad

I simply remember “Histology’s fun!” and then I don’t feel so bad!

Giemsa on pylori and silver on Candida

No need to change bed pans, we keep behind the scene

Diaminobenzidine and some fast red

This is why I think histology’s fun

When the breast case

Needs to be inked

And I’m out of black

I simply remember “Histology’s fun!” and then I don’t feel so bad!

Big scary bandsaw can cut up a femur

Trichromes and Gram stains and eosin with safranin

Tiny round cross sections of Fallopian tube

This is why I think histology’s fun

Techs in green scrub pants with blue nitrile gloves on

Paraffin that sticks to my nails and eyeglasses

Transparent Schiff’s reagent turning to pink

This is why I think histology’s fun

When the slide breaks

When my ice melts

And the coverslipper is jammed

I simply remember “Histology’s fun!” and then I don’t feel so bad!
