Screen Shot 2014-07-08 at 11.01.45 PMWith a mobile phone you can obtain a pathology consult from the University of Pittsburgh Department of Pathology.

According the the App store – the UPMC Pocket Pathologist App “is a handy Expert Pathologist in your pocket whenever you need one. Pocket Pathologist offers an easy-to-use, convenient and cost-effective way to acquire digital pathology images with an iPhone directly from a microscope, and to upload images to the UPMC Digital Pathology Consultation Server. Now it’s easier than ever to capture and send digital slides electronically and to receive rapid consultations via a secure connection without wasting valuable turnaround time and resources on mailings and courier services. This enables users to connect with our team of internationally recognized leaders in pathology whenever they need a second set of eyes and subspecialty expertise, to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.”

I recently submited a case for consultation with images from my phone – a case of gastric calcinosis.  The app was easy to use with enough fields to populate to submit patient information, site and short clinical history along with easy static image upload that worked fine from the hospital with my commercial network provider.

The report was timely and accurate with sub-specialty consultation within 24 hours.  Click on thumbnails below for larger hi-resolution images of submission & case photos.
