Help Support Breast Cancer Survivors This Fall

BY Dr. Keith J. Kaplan

ysc20162Many of you have already been contacted about this in the past few months. Perhaps repeatedly. Through this site, emails, in-person and/or by phone.  And many of you have generously supported these rides and organization. Time is close for the East coast ride and time is closing in on fundraising time.  For those who have so generously supported, my many thanks.  If you would like to consider donating, please do so through the links below. Your donation will go to support Young Survival Coalition. YSC is the premier organization providing supportive services and education resources for young women affected by breast cancer. Any amount helps!
Thank you in advance for your consideration,
Keith

Why am I riding in YSC Tour de Pink this Fall?

Everyday thousands of surgical pathologists, such as myself, send patients on journeys that will forever change their lives. We take care to handle their biopsies, excisions, lymph nodes and clinical laboratory samples, and create pathology reports that put in motion a series of events, emotions, appointments and follow-ups that impact patients and their caregivers.

We review slide sections from tumors, including breast cancer, and while the report provides grading and staging information as well as prognostic immunohistochemical markers (ER,PR,HER2), and represents complete information for clinical management and perhaps the end of pathology’s involvement in the care of the patient, it is only the beginning of a lifelong journey for the patient.

Organizations such as Young Survival Coalition (YSC) understand these journeys and the challenges young women with breast cancer face. As “The Doctor’s Doctor”, surgical pathologists do not necessarily see the treatment successes, failures, recurrences and remissions beyond our diagnoses. After attending a YSC meeting and listening to survivor stories and caregiver experiences, I wanted to help support such a great organization and important cause.

That being said, YSC Tour de Pink is much more than just a bike ride, it is a chance to honor survivors, raise awareness and support important programs for young women affected by breast cancer. I hope I can count on you to help me reach my fundraising goal!
