Kansas Pathology Consultants Adopt Digital Pathology Utilizing ‘On-Demand’ Digital Pathology from OptraSCAN

BY Dr. Keith J. Kaplan

Kansas Pathology Consultants and Services are aiming to go fully digital for remote reporting and consulting of pathology cases, to expedite second opinions and improve overall operational efficiencies

optrascanlogoSUNNYVALE, CA — OptraSCAN Inc. today announced an agreement with Kansas Pathology Consultants to deliver ‘On-Demand’ Digital Pathology solutions to facilitate remote reporting and consulting opportunities, gearing towards full digital pathology adoption.

The group at Kansas Pathology Consultants is working toward a goal of scanning 50-100% of the 50-75 cases a day [using an OptraSCAN™ OS-15 scanner] and distributing the digital images to partners at distant sites. Partners will be connected to a central reporting software system via a secure VPN network, which will eventually be entirely in the cloud, eliminating VPN hassles.

The digital pathology initiative with OptraSCAN will provide the team with a whole slide digital scanner OptraSCAN™ ,digital conferencing tools IMAGEPath™ and TELEPath™, and a subscription of cloud storage to enable live conferencing of scanned pathology images and audio in real time.

“We believe [the implementation of digital pathology] will allow our practice in Wichita to have a competitive edge over other groups who are hospital bound and/or relegated to spending valuable resource time on the road, instead of interpreting cases,” said Dr. Ward Newcomb, President and Lab Director of Kansas Pathology Consultants and Services. “With decreasing availability of pathologists wanting to travel to rural areas, and the costs, delays, and risk of slide loss with either a dedicated courier or FedEX and UPS, moving the images to where pathologists are stationed, made more sense than moving pathologists to where glass slides are made.”

I chose OptraSCAN [On-Demand Digital Pathology] because of the low front-end acquisition cost and features that allowed for remote reporting of scanned slides, consultative options, and same day second opinions that can be set up in real-time,” said Newcomb.
