Aiforia Hub for Education Case Study with the University of Sydney
What is your job title?
Professor Slapeta: I am Professor of Veterinary and Molecular Parasitology at the University of Sydney. At the Sydney School of Veterinary Science I deal with all things parasitology, so anything from ticks, fleas, worms down to single cell organism like Toxoplasma or Trypanosoma and their role in health and disease.
Why did you decide to use the Aiforia software for your teaching?
At the Sydney School of Veterinary Science we have been using virtual microscopy from around 2009 but were heavily relying on the University’s IT support. Recently, it became clear we needed a cloud based SaaS solution.
One of the key drivers behind the decision to use Aiforia was its speed. Us being on the Southern hemisphere, we were initially worried about the speed, but zooming in and out is effortless – no more complaints from our DVM students!
What do you use the Aiforia software for?
At the Sydney School of Veterinary Science we use it principally to deliver class material, both in blended learning assisting classical hand on, microscope classes as well as stand alone online only case-based classes. Similarly the service is used by our colleagues in Science and Health Sciences.
What does it enable you to do that you could not otherwise?
At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, Aiforia was something that we could and can count on. The software keeps working and it is one less thing we and our students need to worry about.
What is the biggest benefit?
Supporting and working with a number of colleagues across the Sydney School of Veterinary Science requires solutions that are easy to adopt with minimal learning curve. Aiforia is easy to use, even a complete novice can have functional pages ready for students in matter of minutes – ready for the next class.
