Assessment of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemical (IHC) staining is used to determine treatment with PD-1 and PD-L1 checkpoint inhibitors, with different scoring methods and criteria for the various assays. With questions unanswered regarding the significance of infiltrating immune cells, optimal cut-offs, tumor heterogeneity etc., there is a need for detailed quantification of PD-L1 positive cells as the field advances.
