SAN FRANCISCO —Motic Digital Pathology launches its MoticFlow telepathology platform, a cloud-based system for consultation, case-sharing and peer review using digital slides. The platform connects pathologists to patients and laboratories around the world and, supporting most slide formats on the market, provides a turnkey solution for multi-site management, international projects, and other collaborative pathology, especially amidst the challenges of COVID-19.

Remote pathology platforms have been a keen interest of many health organizations and groups since the advent of whole-slide imaging (WSI). With both global and local travel severely restricted by the current pandemic, the need for a proven and reliable remote work platform is more important than ever.

Since 2018, MoticFlow has powered remote secondary consultations for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for the Partners for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Initiative, connecting hospitals primarily in Africa with pathology experts in the US. The donated platform provides a robust and functional interface for immediate diagnostic support, and has facilitated pathologist-to-pathologist collaboration for thousands of cases, drastically improving the quality of care and patient outcomes. In Rwanda, more than 95% of biopsied patients have access to ASCP consultants.

“Having MoticFlow as a telepathology platform was a game-changer for our partners in Yangon, Myanmar,” said Jane E. Brock, MBBS, PhD, Chief of Breast Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). “To be able to easily access the subspecialty expertise here at BWH has given the team confidence and ability to diagnose difficult and rare diseases. For us, we’ve really appreciated being able to share our expertise and support them in accurately diagnosing challenging and frequently unusual cases. The platform is very intuitive and collaborative, and has tremendous potential to expand from diagnostic support to being a high-quality teaching tool.”

MoticFlow features an easy-to-use, role-based interface with the ability to adjust slide images, make annotations, and summarize findings along with tracked case history. It directly integrates with any MoticEasyScan scanner and is cross-compatible with most other WSIs as well. The solution also includes secure cloud storage options and can also interface with hospital and laboratory information systems to automate case information entry.

With the platform now available globally, pathologists can leverage digital slides to increase their outreach for case reviews and consultations to improve patient care.

“We are very excited to finally introduce MoticFlow to the global pathology community: it’s been a core part of Motic’s consultation projects in Asia for the last decade, and we have fine-tuned its workflow to meet the needs of the global market,” said Motic’s Director of Digital Pathology, Nicholas Chan. “With the challenges faced by our colleagues around the world from the pandemic, it quickly became our top priority to make the platform available to support and empower pathologists through these trying times.”
