Whole slide imaging (WSI) enables the digitization of microscope slides, producing a digital image for review in the pathology lab. Implementation of digital pathology using whole slide imaging for routine diagnosis will transform the pathology practice, however with so many factors to consider, implementing a Digital Pathology solution can be a challenge even to the most seasoned institutions.

Presenters
Dr Bethany Williams, MBBS PhD
Digital Pathology Research Fellow – Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds
Dr Bethany Williams is a Digital Pathology Research Fellow at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds, where she is a lead investigator on the Northern Pathology Imaging Co-Operative, investigating the clinical adoption of artificial intelligence in pathology. She obtained her medical degree at University College London before commencing histopathology training at Leeds. In 2015, she became the world’s first Leadership Fellow in Digital Pathology, and designed and project managed Leeds’ innovative digital pathology pilot deployment and validation. She is now reaching the end of a PhD focused on patient safety aspects of digital pathology technology, and has published extensively on diverse digital pathology topics including the case for adoption and the business case for digital pathology deployment. She is a thought leader in evidence based digital pathology training and validation, and her scientific papers on digital diagnostic accuracy form the basis of the Royal College of Pathologists’ guidelines for safe, effective digital deployment. Her body of research earned her the Pathological Society’s medal for research impact, and she is regularly invited to speak at international conferences as an authority on the digital pathology evidence base, practical deployment and patient safety.
Dr Darren Treanor, MD, PhD
Consultant Pathologist and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor – Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds
Dr. Darren Treanor MB BSc (Computing) MD PhD is a consultant pathologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, honorary clinical associate professor at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, and guest professor in digital pathology at Linköping University, Sweden.
Dr. Treanor runs the Leeds virtual pathology project, working in digital pathology research and innovation since 2003. He led the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded project “A virtual reality microscope for pathology”.
He is director of the “Northern Pathology Imaging Co-operative”, commencing 2019, a £17m Industry-NHS collaboration to deploy digital pathology across all the hospitals in West Yorkshire, covering a population of 3 million patients, and use this infrastructure to develop and test artificial intelligence systems to diagnose cancer.
Other research activities include 3D tissue reconstruction, image analysis, color measurement/ correction and the use of digital pathology in education and training.
Prof Kyoung Bun Lee
Clinical Professor – Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH)
Professor Lee graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 2002 and is a Clinical Professor at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH). She specialized in hepato-pancreatic biliary pathology, renal pathology, and bone & soft tissue pathology.
In Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH), Prof Lee manages the pathology department’s laboratory automation and computerization system since 2010. She is also on the Korean Society of Pathologists (KSP) committee board as Information Director.
Prof Lee led the digital pathology project at SNUH in 2018, where she introduced a digital pathology system for primary diagnosis; a first in Korea. Besides heading the digital pathology project at SNUH, Prof Lee is passionate about advocating the value of digital pathology, automation of pathology workflow for primary diagnosis and establishment of data-pipeline for computational pathology
Corinne Hill, BSc MSc FFSc RCPA
Lead of Specialty, Histopathology & Molecular Oncology – Pathlab Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Corinne is the Lead Scientist for Histopathology and Molecular Oncology at Pathlab Bay of Plenty and has led the Histology Team for the last 14 years.
Corinne has had a distinguished career in New Zealand, Bermuda, and the United Kingdom. Before joining Pathlab, Corinne held critical roles at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Queens Medical Centre and Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Corinne completed her fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2017 and holds a Master of Science (MSc), Histopathology from Kings College in London. She is an IANZ laboratory auditor in New Zealand and sits on the Organizing Committee of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
Corinne championed the Digital Pathology integration project at Pathlab and was instrumental in bringing together all stakeholders for success. Pathlab was the first Laboratory to go live with adopting digital pathology for Primary Diagnosis in New Zealand.
Corinne is passionate about histopathology and molecular oncology and is keen to see greater adoption of automation and utilization of technology within this field. She is a thought leader in digital pathology and workflow optimization, particularly around sample tracking and patient safety.
