Proscia: Breaking the Cytology Barrier: Unified Digital Pathology at Enterprise Scale
The latest from the Proscia blog
Unlocking a Critical Use Case in Pathology
Cytology has always been one of the most technically demanding areas of pathology. Unlike histology, where tissue sections are relatively uniform, cytology samples require pathologists to interpret dispersed cells across multiple focal planes. Navigating cell clusters, overlapping nuclei, and artifacts means the ability to move seamlessly through depth is essential.

Concentriq makes cytology enterprise-ready, enabling customers to digitally review, collaborate on, and scale cytology workflows alongside histology. With the latest release of Concentriq® AP*, we are expanding this capability — broadening scanner compatibility, enhancing cytology-specific workflows, and strengthening our ecosystem with new AI and hardware partnerships.
As the market accelerates — with FDA clearance beginning and labs eager to expand their digital footprint — Concentriq is already powering cytology adoption at enterprise scale.
Cytology in Concentriq: Workflow Without Compromise
Cytology places unique demands on digital pathology. Reviewing dispersed cells across multiple focal planes requires precision, speed, and tools that replicate — and even enhance — the light microscope experience. Concentriq AP 4.9 expands on its proven Z-stack foundation to deliver a cytology workflow that fits seamlessly into enterprise operations.
- Z-stack navigation built for cytology – Pathologists can step forward or backward through focal planes, or go “hands-free” with the auto-play mode to scroll smoothly through depth, recreating the microscope experience with digital efficiency. Keyboard shortcuts optimized for high-volume review, saving time across hundreds of images.
- Integrated annotation and measurement – From ellipse and freeform outlines to rulers, sticky notes, and cell counters, Concentriq gives Cytotechs the markup and measurement capabilities they expect. Every annotation is stored for easy reference and Pathologist review.
- Image management continuity – Cytology slides are automatically associated with related data via LIS integration and barcoding. There’s no need to maintain a separate process for cytology, enabling efficient review of images that may contain cellblocks or fine needle fragments in addition to fluid preps.
- Collaboration at enterprise scale – Cytology images benefit from the same enterprise tools as histology. Colleagues can share, review, and consult within Concentriq, ensuring cytology expert review is only a click away.
- Image quality and consistency – Built-in quality features, including ICC profile handling ensure images remain reliable even with the larger, more complex data files typical of cytology.
- Expanded ancillary testing for cytology – Support for Fluorescence z-stack images within Concentriq helps unlock deeper insights and expand support for analysis like FISH with cytology samples.

By bringing these capabilities together, Concentriq doesn’t just make cytology possible — it makes it practical, efficient, and scalable across the enterprise.
Announcing a New Partnership with Datexim
We are excited to announce our new partnership with Datexim, a leader in AI-assisted cytology. Datexim’s applications, including CytoProcessor, help cytologists automate repetitive tasks, prioritize cases, and accelerate turnaround times while maintaining accuracy.
By using Datexim through Concentriq, laboratories can:
- Apply AI-driven triage and screening directly within their enterprise pathology workflow.
- Reduce manual review burden while keeping pathologists focused on the most critical findings.
- Unlock scalable efficiency gains in one of pathology’s most resource-intensive workflows.
This partnership expands Concentriq’s Precision Medicine AI Portfolio and is part of Proscia Ready, our partner ecosystem that brings validated hardware and software solutions into Concentriq. With Datexim included, customers gain seamless, trusted access to AI innovation that supports cytology adoption at scale — without the burden of custom integrations.
Strengthening Our Partnership with Pramana/ Evident
Proscia already has a strong partnership with Pramana, whose advanced scanning solutions are widely used by our customers. Pramana supports a wide range of cytology preparations, from ThinPrep and SurePath to Pap smears and challenging smears with artifacts. We are furthering the interoperability with the Pramana solutions to support DICOM cytology workflows in Concentriq AP.
- Their pixel-level volumetric imaging dynamically adjusts focus and captures depth information critical for cytology interpretation with faster multi-layer scans and optimal file size tailored for cytology use cases.
- Importantly, Pramana supports DICOM formats, giving customers flexibility to adopt cytology without being locked into a single standard.
“Digital Pathology adoption is now rapidly expanding beyond the anatomic pathology lab. Our customers want to adopt digital workflows across all of their work. It is critical that the image viewing platforms and case management adapts to these differentiated specimen types. Whole slide images become more complex with Cytology because of enhanced viewing needs. User experience is paramount, and we have been very fortunate to work with Proscia from the very beginning of this technology transformation to seamlessly present Digital Cytology to our customers. Evident Scientific and Proscia are doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes to offer a seamless solution to our customers that mostly works out of the box.”
– Prasanth Perugupalli, VP & GM of Digital Pathology, Pramana/ Evident
This enhanced collaboration underscores Proscia’s commitment to interoperability and customer choice.
Cytology at Enterprise Scale
The expansion of cytology in Concentriq AP marks a major step in scaling digital pathology across the enterprise. Customers are already adding cytology into their enterprise deployments, building on a proven foundation of Z-stack support, cytology workflows and accelerating adoption with AI and advanced scanning technology.
By delivering the workflows, partnerships, and scalability that modern labs demand, Proscia is enabling pathology organizations to:
- Unify anatomic pathology and cytology within one digital platform.
- Deploy AI-assisted workflows that reduce time and cost burdens.
- Future-proof their operations with a flexible, cloud-ready platform that integrates diverse data types and hardware systems.
Cytology is no longer a silo in your digitization. It is now scaling at the enterprise level with Concentriq, and this is just one of many milestones still to come.
Looking Ahead
With the latest release of Concentriq AP, our new Datexim partnership, and a strengthened collaboration with Pramana, Proscia continues to lead the charge in delivering enterprise digital pathology. We are excited to help more customers add cytology to their digital operations, accelerate adoption across the enterprise, and ultimately transform cancer care worldwide.
