MOTIC ANNOUNCES NEW TELEPATHOLOGY COLLABORATION WITH ASCP TO BRING U.S. PATHOLOGY EXPERTISE TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

BY Dr. Keith J. Kaplan

SAN FRANCISCO – Motic, global optics manufacturer and digital pathology solutions provider, announced today a new collaboration with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) to deploy remote consultation systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project will enable partner hospitals to leverage the skills and expertise of the ASCP’s Partners for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment in Africa coalition, bringing affordable, quality diagnostic care to these regions.

Cancer is an emerging health crisis in Africa, where almost 850,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. According to Bio Ventures for Global Health, 60% more Africans die from cancer than from malaria. Additionally, most cases are diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, which contributes to poorer outcomes. This is due in large part to insufficient pathologic review in the region. Advancing detection capabilities and pathology expertise, through international consultation, is a pivotal first step in developing sustainable solutions to fight cancer on the continent.

“By utilizing Motic’s digital pathology system, our partner hospitals will be able to provide the same diagnostic care that we are fortunate enough to have in the U.S.,” said ASCP Chief Medical Officer, Dan Milner Jr., MD. “Motic is helping us provide the next level of adoption and efficiency for our overall global health initiative, adding new capabilities that will help hospitals in underserved countries better detect and treat life- threatening diseases and illnesses.”

In this new collaboration, the ASCP partner hospitals will use Motic’s whole slide imaging systems to digitize their pathology slides, and upload cases to the cloud-based MoticFlow system for consultation with U.S.-based pathologists. MoticEasyScan whole slide imaging systems were recently deployed at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Tanzania, Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania, and Butaro Hospital, Rwanda. Ten additional installations are slated for the coming months. Motic is also donating the MoticFlow teleconsultation platform to support the ASCP initiative.

“We are incredibly excited to have this opportunity to work with ASCP in Africa,” says Nicholas Chan, Director of Business Development at Motic, “Together with their extensive network of dedicated health partners, I am sure we will be able to affect sustainable, lasting change in the continent.”

Motic will feature their digital pathology solutions at ASCP’s upcoming Annual Meeting in Baltimore, October 3-5, 2018.   Visit Motic at Booth #1314.
