Getting paid is a difficult issue

There are numerous factors that make reimbursement for PCR tests to detect SARS-CoV-2 challenging. Among those reasons are verifying patient insurance eligibility and demographic information, as well as the sheer volume of tests—an area where missed charges can have a tremendously negative effect on your laboratory’s finances. These and other factors impact your reimbursement, as the volume of tests has risen dramatically with the addition of serology tests to the COVID-19 diagnostic service mix.

After the tests are complete and results reported, your lab’s next step is to create and code the claims. Both the CMS and the CPT Editorial Panel have created new SARS-CoV-2 codes.  To encourage labs to perform the tests, CMS also doubled the payment for high-throughput molecular tests to detect SARS-CoV-2. Is your coding and billing department up to speed on these and other crucial developments, in order to maximize reimbursement?
